THE ARGYLE

A gut renovation of a downtown rowhouse

PROJECT SUMMARY

The house was originally constructed around 1880: part of a row of four small two-storey homes. Subsequent renovations completely denuded the house of any original details, but based on the age and roof shape, the facade may have been in the second-empire style. As it was before our renovation, though, the house had a bare, and characterless look, common to many unkindly renovated homes in the neighbourhood.

Our project began in 2019. Our clients had recently returned to Toronto after a long stint in Brooklyn, New York, similar to our own personal journey. In addition to that, we bonded with our clients over the shared experience of rowhouse living. Together, we delved into the unique possibilities and advantages that this particular house in this specific neighborhood had to offer, creating personalized and meaningful design solutions throughout.

Our clients desired a home that was filled with natural light, ample storage options, and a ground floor powder room. They also wanted cozy nooks and a proper facade with curb appeal. In terms of design style, they sought a warm and inviting atmosphere with a mix of textures, drawing inspiration from a variety of sources to create a warm and embellished modern feel. We ended up renovating every floor of this home, revamped the backyard, and gave the exteriors a significant facelift.
